I want to show you traditional Korean wrestling, Ssireum. I’d like to make Ssireum a globally recognized sport. I want more people in the US to know what Ssireum is. This episode features a match between female foreign students from Jordan and Korea. Rama is a foreign studennt from Jordan, and is majoring in economics Ahruem is a college student, majoring in dance choreography. She is a member of an idol group. As is tradition, both athletes bow to each other before entering the ring as a sign of mutual respect. Before the round begins, both athletes grab each other’s belts, which are called sapa. Rama is wearing the blue sapa. Ahruem is wearing the red sapa. Ahruem combined “bae ji gi” and “mil uh chi gi” together. “bae ji gi” and “mil uh chi gi” Rama and Ahruem both attempt “miluh chi gi”. However, Rama pulls it off successfully and wins the round. In the third round, Rama and Ahruem tie. In Ssireum, in the event of a tie, the person that weighs less automatically wins the round. As is tradition and rule, both opponents bow to each other before leaving the ring, as a sign of respect. There are 3 rounds per match. Whoever wins 2 rounds first, proceeds in the tournament. After winning two rounds, Ahreum proceeds to the quarterfinals. Thank you for watching, see you next time!
