M.C. Perry High School hosts the first wrestling tournament in the new school

M.C. Perry High School rolled out the wrestling
mats to host their first ever wrestling tournament in the new facility. “We had our first home meet of our wrestling
season. We’ve been traveling all year. This is our eighth event and we’ve been
on the road for seven weeks in a row. So, it was nice to have our kids back home
for a home meet. We had two Japanese schools from the local
community here and two other DOD schools for a tournament. Coach Argueta encourages anyone to try out
for the team – if they’re prepared for a challenge and willing to dedicate their
time to train for success. “It’s great to see these guys come in
from not knowing anything at all to being here, winning championships. That’s the motivation in my terms. I want to see them succeed because it makes
me feel good that I’m able to teach somebody to be great.” The students at M.C. Perry practice freestyle
wrestling which brings together traditional wrestling, judo and sambo techniques. I like the competitive fire that comes with
wrestling; it’s an individual battle out there. My kids put in work every day at practice
and then to see them progress from what we do in practice to onto the mat in competition
is really fun to watch. We’re looking to grow as a program because
it’s just starting up and being a small school we’ve got to get people excited about
it and that’s really my goal as the coach is to get the program back where it needs
to be so we can compete on a high level. The wrestling team is also looking to hold
trials for children 8 to 14 years old to improve their wrestling skills before they hit high
school. Reporting from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni,
Japan, I’m Lance Corporal Emily Kirk.
